Hard to Know How Hard to Ride

My New Year's resolution was to ride LESS miles this year.  I have been just too tired most of the time when riding 6000 miles each year, so I thought that cutting back would give me a little more energy and more speed for the fast rides.  Unfortunately the extreme heat this summer has made it difficult to evaluate the change which so far is around 500 miles below last year.  The Wednesday ride is heating up as well.  It seems more strong riders are showing up, which is good, but makes it harder for me as the speeds increase and I find it hard to keep up.  The heat really saps my leg strength.  I'm trying more hydration and Endurolytes to see if that will make a difference.  since taking the Endurolytes I don't seem to be quite as tired all of the time, so maybe they will help.  The tandem is another matter.  I have a tendency to push to hard and it hurts my knees, so I have to be careful and balance the desire to go faster with the desire to walk without artificial knees.  We finally have been getting some rain and some cooler temps.  Too late for the corn probably, but we have stopped watering the garden and the blueberries are pulling through.
